  A new TS4 for PS4 rumour
Posted by: FezzyBear - 03-05-2014 09:32 AM - Replies (26)

So aye, this popped up in my Google Alert e-mails for TimeSplitters 4:

http://emgn.com/gaming/timesplitters-4-t...-xbox-one/ Wrote:TimeSpliiters 3 was the last of the series, released in 2008 on Xbox, PS2 and GameCube it was hugely popular with gaming fans throughout. Timesplitters 4 has been a whistle in the wind but no confirmation or whisper had been given on a possible new game.

There were big rumours going around the web in 2011/12 that Time splitters 4 was indeed in development and would be making an appearance with the next-gen consoles. This was the case until the studio developing the series went into administration and Crytek took the reins. Once this happened, they immediately suspended the work on the upcoming shooter indefinitely.

To sweeten the blow, Crytek announced they would release ‘TimeSplitters: Rewind” for both the PS4 and PC. To add to the news further, they said it would be completely free to everyone.

“TimeSplitters Rewind is a fantastic initiative that Crytek continues to support,” Nick Button-Brown, the general manager of games for Crytek

After the takeover when the question was put to TimeSplitters series developer Steve Ellis, “Do you think the series will be developed again for the future?” he replied:

“I don’t think there’s any chance that’s going to happen.”

Now, this is where it gets really interesting, we have given you the background story above so everything is better understood. You may have read the above and think “This is about TimeSplitters not coming back”. You would be wrong.

When Crytek took over the studio, they announced the work on the game was suspended, forever. From a close source which wished to remain unnamed, this was not the case at all. The game was still in very early development as was not going to be ready for the first year of next-gen release. They announced TS: Rewind to almost confirm the end of the series, but this was never the plan.

Our source mentioned in detailed to us, TimeSplitters 4 will be coming to PS4 as an “Exclusive” and describe the game as the “Xbox One killer”. A lot of focus has been put onto the release of Titanfall with the Xbox one but this is one of many cards Sony have up their sleeves for the Sony PS4.

We don’t know when the game will be announced but the real possibility of TimeSplitters 4 is ever more emerging. As more details come to us, we will update you.

I mean, it's pretty vague, unrealistic and shoddily-written, but I'd definitely be interested in finding out who the source was. It'd be lovely if it was true, though.
It was a popular rumour on N4G the other day, but that doesn't add much to its credibility.

Edit: As an added bit of intrigue, Official PlayStation Magazine UK teases that the March 2014 edition that a series of massive significance will be finally revealed for PS4 on the cover.
http://gematsu.com/2014/02/opm-uk-teases...icance-ps4 Wrote:Official PlayStation Magazine UK is teasing a ‘massive’ PlayStation 4 game reveal for next month’s cover.

“Next month’s cover is one of the most exciting in OPM history, with a series of massive significance finally being confirmed for PS4,” OPM UK teases in its current issue. “Why is this a down? Because we can’t say anything more until then. Sorry…”

What could it be? Fallout, Mass Effect, PaRappa the Rapper, Crash Bandicoot? We’ll find out when the next issue of OPM UK hits newsstands in March.

TechRadar interview Steve Ellis about TimeSplitters 4: 'Time to move on?'
Posted by: FezzyBear - 07-18-2013 01:11 PM - Replies (22)

The article says the full interview will be up in the future. You have the usual things we knew about how difficult it was to market the idea of a TimeSplitters 4 to publishers, but Ellis also adds an interesting bit about what they were aiming for regarding the characters of TS4.

Quote:If you're still holding out hope that TimeSplitters 4 might see the light of day on Xbox One and PS4, it might be time to let that dream go.

TechRadar recently spoke to TimeSplitters series developer Steve Ellis, who told us that his experience trying to sell a fourth game while at the now-defunct Free Radical Design showed that the franchise had become unsellable to publishers.

And he doesn't expect that that's about to change with the new consoles, despite many cries from fans to get it off the ground.

\"I don't think there's any chance that's going to happen,\" he said, talking about whether the game might make its way onto the next generation of consoles.

\"You always got to the point where the marketing person in the room would say 'I don't know how to sell this' because they want a character that they can put on the front of the box.

\"Every marketing person and every publisher we spoke to [said] 'You can't have that as your selling point' and maybe the sales figures of previous games backed that up.\"
Quote:Back to the Future

When asked about what he had wanted to put into TimeSplitters 4, Ellis responded:

\"One direction we wanted to take it in was to increase the differentiation between the different characters I think that was one of my key goals for it. To make it less than they are just different skins with slightly different attributes but to give them genuinely different abilities. I think that would be good.\"
Quote:TimeSplitters 4 was in development for a short period of time before Free Radical Design went into administration and was purchased by Crytek. Work on the game was then postponed indefinitely.

Nonetheless, eager fans have been campaigning for the game to be picked up again, while Crytek has given its blessing for a fan-made game, titled TimeSplitters Rewind, to be developed.

Keep an eye on TechRadar over Brit Week to see our full interview with Steve Ellis.

I would have really loved to have seen different abilities with characters in TS4. Obviously there would have been an option to have the ability to toggle whether you'd play with them or not, but it could have given the option to allow for interesting new gameplay experiences within the traditional TimeSplitters match.

I guess you could also use this thread to discuss nice ideas for character abilities that you would have liked to have seen implemented (there probably already has been a thread for that though). Oh, and let me know about whether I should change the title of the thread to focus it on the information about the proposed ideas from before or not.

  Game Informer Recognizes TimeSplitters Rewind
Posted by: Undead Priest52 - 04-19-2013 03:40 AM - Replies (25)

I was skimming through this month's Game Informer magazine, when I looked up in the corner of Page 24, and saw Cortez. My mouth literally opened at that. Although it's just a mention of something we already know, it really surprised me to see a mention (albeit a small one) of TimeSplitters in the magazine.

Anyway, this isn't a huge deal, but I felt it was worth having a thread, seeing as most likely no one else here reads Game Informer magazines. Maybe just a couple of users do.

Here's a picture of it:

For anyone who does not find the words in the picture legible, here is what it says:

Quote:TimeSplitters Rewind is coming, thanks to a group of hardcore fans. Crytek - owner of the IP since it acquired original series' developer Free Radical - has given the group permission to make the game with CryEngine 3. The free PC game draws on the first three TimeSplitters games but it's also a new experience centered on the franchise's multiplayer and challenge modes. A demo is planned for this December, with the actual game hopefully shortly thereafter.

Well, there you go.

  TimeSplitters Respawns onto PC
Posted by: Jolteon - 03-15-2013 11:00 PM - Replies (229)

Quote:The cult classic shooter series is finally making a comeback. And yes, there will be monkeys.

Never underestimate a dedicated fan base. After Free Radical kicked the bucket and was purchased by Crytek, it looked like there was no hope for a new entry to the much-loved TimeSplitters franchise. In spite of this, a few optimistic supporters started a petition begging for a TimeSplitters 4. And by \"a few,\" I mean 75,000. Crytek, as the current owner of the IP, wasn't impressed enough to justify developing a new installment, but it did the next-best thing: the company gave a team of 25 talented fans official permission to resurrect the series with a new game. This fan-directed project aims to capture the best parts of the TimeSplitters trilogy, and has been appropriately dubbed TimeSplitters Rewind.

The team was permitted to use assets from the main TimeSplitters games, but declined in favor of rebuilding everything from scratch in CryEngine 3. Using an updated engine will lend the game a more modern look, but the developers don't plan on fixing what's not broken. The 300+ playable characters, dozens of weapons, and classic maps will be as close to the original flavor as possible. \"It will still feel like a TimeSplitters game,\" promises project manager Michael Hubicka.

Rewind focuses on the fast-paced multiplayer and skill-based Challenge Mode of the series, ditching the campaign and co-op modes in the interest of finishing the project in a reasonable amount of time. 8 to 16 players will be able to play online, over LAN, or solo, with AI-controlled bots available in any mode. All the classic game types will be present, along with a couple of new modes. The team hasn't ruled out the possibility of recreating the trilogy's campaign, but it will have to wait until they can dedicate their full attention to it.

The project is coming along slowly but surely, with a demo planned to release by December and the finished product available not long afterwards. The completed game will be 100% free, with batches of new content (including many of the playable characters) scheduled for free post-launch updates. Currently the core team is developing the game in their spare time, but if you think you can help contribute to the effort you're welcome to contact Hubicka to lend a hand and speed up the effort. It's a labor of love, after all - and thankfully, there's enough love for TimeSplitters to actually make this happen.

Crytek giving support to a CryENGINE 3 TimeSplitters mod
Posted by: FezzyBear - 11-28-2012 11:57 PM - Replies (160)

Cairn Trenor from the forums just posted this up on the '100,000 Strong for TimeSplitters 4' Facebook group, and figured I'd put it up here for anybody interested.
http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/11/29/crytek...tters-mod/

Quote:I have just had word from Crytek that they are going to permit and support a TimeSplitters CryEngine mod. I am now looking for modders that can handle the CryEngine. If i manage to get a group together, then they may let us use assets from the original TimeSplitters game! So the idea is to build a TimeSplitters all-in-one. All the levels, all the characters and all the weapons.

If you are interested then contact me at - Killerwesik@gmail.com or contact me on Skype - Cairn_Trenor. This is BIG for anyone that wants to get into the gaming industry!

More on why TimeSplitters 4 was rejected by publishers. [Full interview]

It seems there was a multi character campaign as well. Other than that, nothing we didn't already know.

[FezzyBear's edit]

Here's the full interview:
http://www.gamestm.co.uk/features/exclus...interview/

Here are some choice quotes I've picked out that I found interesting:

Quote:When we spoke to David Doak a few years ago he detailed that TimeSplitters 4 would have featured multiple parodies of other popular shooters. How far did you get with the idea and what games were featured?

Steve Ellis: The real answer: To be honest I don’t remember many of the details, and some of them probably never got further than being in Dave’s head. You’d be better asking Dave about that.
A printable answer – and the answer that I would probably still give even if I could remember the details: I think I’ll keep those details to myself for now in the vague hope that somehow TimeSplitters 4 will eventually be developed and released.

Karl Hilton: Yes, The first TimeSplitters had featured a character in a dinosaur suit as our ’homage’ to Turok which was a successful franchise at that time. We really liked that character and couple with the general irreverent nature of TS (Cortez being the obvious example as a parody space marine) it seemed a natural progression. It was still in the very early planning stages so little more had been done than some concept art. A few of the first idea I can remember were underground street racing (with the remote control cat) and survival horror with monkeys (what else would TS use?).

[quote]Could TimeSplitters 4 still happen in the future?

Karl Hilton:
TimeSplitters is now part of Crytek. Cevat Yerli has gone on record as saying he’d like to do something with it in the future but it has to be the right new approach to make it relevant to gamers today. It’s been a long time since Future Perfect came out.

Steve Ellis: I guess a new series of The Wire could still happen in the future. Or Friends. Or TimeSplitters 4. I’d like to see it happen but I don’t expect that it will. I think it could only happen if it was changed into a very different game that would appeal more to publishers – but then it wouldn’t really be TimeSplitters. Maybe TimeSplitters was only really possible when dev costs were lower – when a 2 million unit selling game could make a profit.

Also, of the 16 or so people who made the first game in the series, at least 10 or 11 of them (including myself) have moved on to other things now.

There are more details in the link, so please give it a wee click.

TimeSplitters HD petition needs more votes says Crytek
Posted by: Jolteon - 11-14-2012 11:34 AM - Replies (154)

Source: http://www.metro.co.uk/tech/games/917870...ays-crytek

Crytek has once again hinted they’re interested in a HD version of TimeSplitters, but claim the small number of votes on its online petition proves there’s not much of an audience.

German developer Crytek has put the ball firmly in the fans’ court when it comes to a HD version of TimeSplitters, saying that so far they’ve not gained as many petition singers as they need to convince the company’s bean counters.

CEO and president Cevat Yerli brought up the petition himself, when speaking to Game Informer, but admitted that, ‘unfortunately the petition doesn’t look that convincing. If the petition picks up it will be an even better argument for us.’

‘At a personal level, I’m a big fan of Timesplitters 2,’ he said. ‘For me, I would love to see the game out there, as a newborn HD version or what not. I definitely would love to see it. But the case of turning this into a business decision is still difficult’.

The petition, which you can sign up to here, has a goal of 300,000 signatures and according to Yerli that’s likely to be enough to get a HD version greenlit. However, at time of writing the petition is only at 31,762 supporters – so there’s a long way to go.

The TimeSplitters games were created by British team Free Radical Design, many of who worked at Rare on the classic Nintendo 64 game GoldenEye 007. TimeSplitters’ multiplayer is still seen as the closest spiritual successor to GoldenEye, with the second of the three games being a particular fan favourite.

Free Radical was experimenting with ideas for a TimeSplitters 4 when the company almost went under because of LucasArts and the debacle over Star Wars: Battlefront III.

They were only saved by being bought out by Crytek, and renamed Crytek UK. So far though they’ve only worked on the multiplayer modes of Crysis 2 and 3 – as well as the forthcoming Homefront 2.

TimeSplitters 4 and TimeSplitters HD 'unlikely' to appear
Posted by: steviebwoy - 10-29-2012 10:03 AM - Replies (128)

Hate to be the bringer of bad news, but it looks a lot like there's no chance for either Timesplitters 4, or Timesplitters HD.

First link is a scan I took from GAMES™ magazine in the UK, the second is a question I posed to Nick Button-Brown, the General Manager of Games at Crytek.

No hope for Timesplitters 4;

And no hope for Timesplitters HD;

I did raise this with the 100,000 Strong.. FB page, but the owner of the page doesn't want to post it as he'll "lose Likes".  o_0

Nick Button-Brown of Crytek talks about the future of TimeSplitters
Posted by: Drifting - 10-18-2012 07:42 PM - Replies (21)

http://www.crytek.com/blog/inside-crytek...-questions

Nick Button-Brown, General Manager of Games at Crytek, talks about TimeSplitters and what Crytek hopes to do with the franchise.

Quote:What are Crytek’s plans for the TimeSplitters franchise? Are you a fan of the series?

I’m a huge fan of TimeSplitters. I worked at Eidos during TS1, EA during TS3 and was part of Crytek when Free Radical joined. I mean, who wouldn’t love flaming zombie monkeys? We know we have a lot of very passionate fans (unfortunately publishers aren’t amongst them), are always looking to find a way to do something within the franchise and have looked at a lot of possibilities. When we find something that works for us and the team, we will do our best to make it happen, and I will personally make sure we announce it from the rooftops.
