Never heard the term used for firearms I don't think. I always thought it was something along the lines of gaining unwanted attention from the police.
Sort of like if you had wanted stars in Grand Theft Auto and you had to 'lose the heat' from the cops.

I know this is slightly different, but in Crysis 2, Nathan Gould refers to the government as being 'scared as Calamari', which refers to the Calamari that hid in the cupboard when the Spacestation was invaded back in TimeSplitters 2.
That's excellent. Although I thought Crytek UK only arrived on the scene when they had to do the multiplayer aspect of the game. I didn't think they'd have any sort of power over the dialogue of one of the main characters in the single player.
If it's true though, then that's a great spot. Maybe calamari are known for being scared, and that's where FRD picked it up from.
I think this would be fun if every body was a monkey and have your neck snapped.

I guess in nature they do hide in a cloud of their oWn ink at the first hint of danger.  Or is that some other cephalopod?

Future Perfect:
Challenge > Misc. Challenges > Cortez Can't Jump!
A reference to the fact that there is no option to jump in TimeSplitters.
A reference to the movie, 'White Men Can't Jump'. It was about basketball, and you have to throw things through hoops with the Temporal Uplink.

Challenge > Monkeying Around > Brass Monkeys
Also known as Monkey Curling.
Reference to the phrase, "It's cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brass_monkey_%28colloquial_expression%29

Challenge > Cut-out Shoot-out > Hart Attack
"In a parallel universe not too far [a]way"
A reference to, 'In a galaxy far, far away' from the Star Wars series.

Challenge > Cut-out Shoot-out > Balls of Steel
"Well, if he wants to be a real robot he needs to play by the rules - A robot may not injure human beings. Yep that's right, not even cardboard ones."
A reference to Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Laws_of_Robotics
Probably more known to people through the 2004 film adaptation of I, Robot.
I think this would be fun if every body was a monkey and have your neck snapped.

The Timesplitters: Future Perfect rendition of Harry Tipper is likely based off of Austin Powers.
Also, there is an arcade league challenge named "Babes in the Woods", which is the title of an old tale: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babes_in_the_Wood

The title is a play on words: The "babes" in the mission are not adults, but teenage girls, and are also good looking girls. It could also reference the babes' unfortunate fate, being killed by Harry Tipper quite a few times.
You talkin to me?I don`t think so! You can just call me HTR!(Wow,that sounded cheesy).

TimeSplitters 2:

Amateur League > Too Hot to Handle > Disco Inferno
"Lady Jane is busy strutting her stuff in the nightclub, and the dancefloor is hotting up... literally! Avoid the night fever as long as possible!"
A reference to two songs: Disco Inferno and Night Fever.

Honorary League > Maximus > Killer Queen
A reference to the song 'Killer Queen', by Queen.

Honorary League > Maximus
The 'Maximus' set of challenges all take place in the Gladiator mode. In the film, 'Gladiator', the main character that Russell Crowe plays is called 'Maximus'.

Honorary League > Burns n' Bangs > Rocket Man
A reference to the Elton John song of the same name.

Honorary League > Outnumbered But Never Outpunned > Time to Split
The earliest use of the phrase that would be uttered so many times in Future Perfect.

Elite League > Sincerent Form of Flattery > Aztec the Dino Hunter
"Aztec Warrior just loves to hunt dinosaurs! The Aztec Priest has tried to convince him otherwise by explaining all of the ethical and ecological reasons which make it a morally questionable activity. Aztec Warrior ignores him, he says the Priest's just a cerebral bore..."
Might have already been stated, but the title is an obvious reference to Turok. However, the Cerebral Bore was also a famous weapon of the franchise:
Turok 2 Cerebral Bore Demonstration

Well, not a bad rip-off.
But "Bite my crunchy brown ass!" was clearly from "Bite my shiny metal ass!" from Bender.

I'm not even going to refer to the fact that this is a double post and I am aware of it being such. Oh, wait...

Came across this today on the TS Wiki, and I don't think it has been mentioned before:
"Beetleman's native timezone is 2280 as in some Alien movies, the Aliens would switch Human heads and latch them onto animal bodies which confirms this character a reference to those films. His thumbnail theme is also light brown which is the theme of Return to Planet X"
I think this would be fun if every body was a monkey and have your neck snapped.

Boy, that's poorly written.  Some Alien movies take place in 2280? Which ones?  The head switching thing was in Mars Attacks I believe, so why not just reference that movie? The brown background thing sounds like pure reaching.

Maybe they're trying to refer to the film titled "Alien".  "Mars Attacks" doesn't take place in 2280.  Frankly, I think the whole thing is reaching and could probably just be taken off the Wiki.

Nope.

The Beetleman is based on the main character from a short story I had to read for an English essay and absolutely nothing to do with Alien, Mars Attacks or Planet X.

TimeSplitters 2:

Elite League > Sincerent Form of Flattery > Aztec the Dino Hunter
"Aztec Warrior just loves to hunt dinosaurs! The Aztec Priest has tried to convince him otherwise by explaining all of the ethical and ecological reasons which make it a morally questionable activity. Aztec Warrior ignores him, he says the Priest's just a cerebral bore..."
Might have already been stated, but the title is an obvious reference to Turok. However, the Cerebral Bore was also a famous weapon of the franchise:

All of the Sincerest Form of Flattery matches are based on other video games, which FRD enjoyed:

Elite League > Sincerest Form of Flattery > Half-Death

"The Scientists have been experimenting with reactor cores and anomalous materials with the usual result - a transdimensional rift aliens running amok. The marines have been sent in to shoot anything that moves. That includes you, Dr. Peabody!"

This one is obviously a reference to Half-Life, where the main character (Dr. Freeman) works in the Anomalous Materials Lab in a secret research facility, but accidentally opens a rift to another world, allowing hostile aliens to travel to Earth, and provoking an attack by the US Marines who wanted to remove all trace of the facility and its actions.

Elite League > Sincerest Form of Flattery > Dead Fraction

"The Miners of the Ulcer Corp are dying of a strange Pox and the company executives are running a cynical sweepstake on the morality figures - "Guess the Dead Fraction". The Miners with the Pox are revolting, none more so than Jebediah Crump!"

Clearly, this is based on Red Faction, where miners at the Ultor Corporation are suffering from a mysterious disease and spark a revolution against their oppressors.

These are so on the nose that I question if they can even truly be considered "references".

Go on...

I can't remember much about it, or even its name (this was 6 years ago), but in the story an average guy wakes up one morning to find that he had turned into a human-sized beetle and then goes on to his workplace, where everybody treats him badly etc.

Yes. When I read the story for the essay, it reminded me so much of TimeSplitters that I couldn't write anything else. I didn't get a great mark for that one. :tarryhipper:

Oh never mind, too slow at posting when mobile...

Mars Attacks seems somewhat more relevant than the Kafka story. Since its actually alien grafting experiments.
