As most of you are probably aware, Suzanne Collin's Hunger Games book has recently been made into a feature length film. There has been a great deal of hype about the film (deservedly so) and I watched it a few weeks ago with a friend of mine. It was a superb film with great suspense and fluid action. The environments had been laid out well and everything about this film seemed right, despite some mediocre acting here and there.

The following week later I went out and purchased the trilogy of books and am so far about half way through the first book, and it has me hooked. It just feels unique. Perhaps I'm more into this as the book is aimed at teens (or because I haven't read a book since God knows when) but I'd like to here other's thoughts on the book/film.

(I've put it in this board as it originated as a book).

I never was intrested in the series, and the movie seemed too cheesey. Everyone one in my school except a few kids (including me) are all hype about the movie and book series. I personally, don't see why it's so great.

I was assigned the book in the 8th grade and found it to generally be fairly lackluster. Truth be told, people are only raving about it because it's the sort of thing that's designed to sell big, it's exceedingly simple in a way that clearly betrays that it was written for people who don't read. In this regard, it's a very shallow book, and the stench of money is unmistakeable throughout it's pages.

I didn't hear of it until the big hoo-ha surrounding the release of the films. Now that I know the books exist, I haven't been interested in reading them for many of the same reasons pointed out in this clip.

I probably wouldn't mind watching the film though, because people compared it to Battle Royale. That's about it.
I think this would be fun if every body was a monkey and have your neck snapped.

I keep hearing this, but I can't comprehend it, for Battle Royal I found that the manga and film were splendid and moving, frankly I don't see how they could relate other than the kids killing each other on an island part, as for the hungergames I read or I should say started to read the first one, it's the only book I've ever intentionally never finished...honestly I found it was shit, hope the movie changed that by some miracle, highly doubtful though..

It's brilliant. I read the book after it's biggest one-girl-fan-club (who I may have mentioned in the relationship thread) literally shoved a copy in my face. Although the main character seemed to be a total moron, there were still many hours of awesome to be found, including a section which seemed eerily similar to Half-Life 2. The film was also amazing, probably better and I'd recommend it to anyone.

Quote from: The Hunger Games IMDb plot
Set in a future where the Capitol selects a boy and girl from the twelve districts to fight to the death on live television, Katniss Everdeen volunteers to take her younger sister's place for the latest match.
Quote from: Battle Royale IMDb plot
In the future, the Japanese government captures a class of ninth-grade students and forces them to kill each other under the revolutionary "Battle Royale" act.
I'm... going to go out on a limb here and take a guess that it is indeed the kids killing each other part that is the main comparison.

Hunger Games is what happens when you mix The Running Man, Battle Royale and the horrible film, Gamer.

I watched it and it was...meh.

Yeah, agreed. It doesn't look at all interesting to me. The story/plot of it seems really dumb, and it seems just too weird and cheesy for my tastes.
I definitely wouldn't be interested in the books.

City of God has kids killing each other as well, and it's based on real events.

That is very different though. Nothing like Battle Royale.

Yes true, I was just trowing it out there as another movie that as kids killing each other, but in that case it was gang related.

I've read the first half of the first book for a book report, but I didn't get to finish it. I would rather have read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer than this book.

You know, looking back at this, me saying Hunger Games is just a few films mixed together as a bad thing is hypocritical seeing as my favorite film of all time is Reservoir Dogs
