So I made a music blog. I would like your local bands.
« on: July 27, 2012, 01:02:29 AM »
I made one a while ago on Blogger or whatever and posted like 3 times and it looked shitty. This time I legged up, used Wordpress, got hosting and it's a lot nicer. The focus is on indie/psych-pop/alt-folk/electronic-pop kind of stuff. I'm trying to provide a good mixture of moderately popular music (Animal collective, Tame Impala, Grizzly Bear, Beach House) and a lot of local bands that don't really touch the blogosphere too much. It's hardish to find local music outside your own residence, so I figured asking people on the forums I visit is a good place to start (since my real life friends are all from the same state for the most part). I also want to hear stuff just for my own sake of discovering new music. So if anyone's got stuff they want to share, please do! Even if it might not fit in, there's no harm.

Here's a band that my cousin is in:
SUZIE by Theatre Crisp

They do some pretty sweet stuff. This is an original by them, called Suzie. I like their style of music, sort of Rap-Rock-y. If you're wondering, My cousin is second from the right :D

Another band I know, Also local to Niagara

My Son The Hurricane - "Ain't My Style" [OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO]

Not local at all but I love Shotgun Jimmie:
(Not my favourite Shotgun song, but my favourite that you can find on youtube that's not a live version)
MIND CRUMB - Shotgun Jimmie

So here's two fairly obscure bands that I love (not exactly local though):

Algebra Suicide (post-punk/new wave/spoken word/DIY)
Algebra suicide - True romance at the world's fair

Lydia Tomkiw's poetry mixed with husband Don Hedeker's post-punk guitar music with distinct new-wave textures. If you squint it sounds a bit pre-shoegaze at times, too. Anyway, it doesn't need catchy labels, with some of the best words I've heard in music always underpinned with simple yet distinct layers of music that either compliment and contrast with them, or both. Their 20-song anthology: http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/361962/The-Secret-Like-Crazy-rar.html

Velvet Chrome (lo-fi/DIY/no-wave/actually-psychedelic-music)
http://soundcloud.com/velvet-chrome

They're pretty far out THAT'S PRETTY FAR OUT MAN

Granted, for Velvet Chrome, you can probably find the album Readymades online, but for their discography or their excellent Anthology (or beyond that, the Stone EP) you would have to ask Frank Ouellette of Hobo Cult records (he's in the band as well, and also in Hobo Cubes).

A Local band that consists of three members. Two of which I know quite well.

The Rickashays - The Art Of complaining (Sampler)

The Rickashays - Songs your mum would enjoy (sample)

The Rickashays are quite a happy, go lucky sound, and are very easy listening.
Both their albums are on iTunes and Amazon, but it's nigh impossible to find some of their work on Youtube.

Damnit. I have no money, I already spent all my money buying beastie boys and Dj shadow. Tell your friends in that band, I bought their album in spirit.

Where does it go wrong? I gave it to someone else who said it worked...

Admittedly I used the first site I could find, and it looks a bit dodgy.

I'm sorry to say there really are no good local artists around here. They're all either nu-metal, AOR tributes or terrible modern gangsta rap. There is one nationally-known act from my hometown (whose original drummer was an ex-girlfriend's brother), but I don't think they qualify as local anymore, nor are they good, but I will keep an eye on this thread for new artists to listen to!

It just says "Page could not be found". Does it work for anyone else?

Thanks guys, not all of it fits perfectly, but I enjoyed all of it. Shotgun Jimmie reminds me of Pavement a bit so that's a pretty good find. Algebra Suicide is a really cool concept, I will keep them in mind for sure.

Here's the link http://www.campfiresongs.net since joshed asked for it (in pm but I figured I'd post it here too)
