Olympics 2012
« on: July 27, 2012, 05:31:39 PM »
The London Olympic games were officially opened today after an enjoyable opening ceremony directed by Danny Boyle. An estimated 1 billion people were watching, were you?

So this is a thread in which we can discuss the games this year.

Will you be attending any events? My family managed to get tickets for handball and football.

I like them but I'm not as enthusiastic about them as many people are. Was gonna go watch this year but I'm not.

What I dislike though is how it may bankrupt my dad's and many other people's businesses  :(

Im not a fan of them at all donno why lol i just find it funny that at the start the majority of people voted against it being held here and yet our *government* went with it anyway... Shows how much they care for our input. XD

I very much enjoyed the opening. Seeing a great deal of smartly dressed gentlemen dancing is most amusing. It was also very cleverly made. Made me very proud to be British.

Alas, I will be unable to attend any of the events as I'm currently in Javea of Spain.

The opening ceremony was simply amazing and loved every minute before and after the endless parade of nations. It was nice to see what makes Britain great - we make noises, turn beautiful countryside into factories and give small children nightmares.

I'm not actually going to any events, but two of my friends at school have volunteered to help with the archery, so I'm going to be looking out for them in those events.

EDIT: How could I forget the music though? I never thought I'd ever hear some of those tracks at any kind of formal ceremony:

Bee Gees ♫ Stayin' Alive [High Quality]

Electric Light Orchestra - Mr Blue Sky

Blur - Song 2

I can't tell if I preferred that or the James Bond-Queen segment.

Also, Japan is a MACHINE at women's volleyball.

And team GB didn't pick up any medals today :(

I'm not so interested in the London 2012 Olympics.  The only thing that interests me is if the entire thing blows up or a massive Alien invasion happens during the Olympics.  I know neither will happen but there is a score that I need to settle between me and an entire community of conspiracy theorists.  If it does not happen, i'm going to laugh in their faces although they will most likely say, 'Yeh, well we warned people about it so they decided not to do it.'  Bunch of idiots.
I have herd that the opening was incredible.  Did not watch it, however it is just like the UK to try and make good on a deal.  After all, apparently it is the first time the Olympics was to be hosted in one country for the Forth time or something.  Either way, they spent too much money on franchising, creating new mascots and building new logos to hold back on an opening ceremony.

And to think they're doing just as well as Germany are!

EDIT: Damn you Japan! Getting a silver medal for falling off.. I understand where they were coming from with the dismount but god damn that was ours for the taking. Poor Ukraine too.

At least we're finally picking up a few medals. It was a shame about Tom Daley and Pete Waterfield though, riding high in first and then the fourth round dive happened :(

Sorry for the double post, but this was simply too ridiculous for me to ignore.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/19057016

Basically, the South Korean fencer (Shin) was drawing the German fencer 5-5 with a second to go. Shin had the priority which means she would go through if it was a tie. When the match resumed with the one second left, the German fencer made three unsuccessful swings, however the clock malfunctioned and went down to nought about two seconds after the match resumed. The official decided to reset the clock to one and of course, the German struck a winning shot. South Korea appealed and this went on for about 70 minutes and Shin was left in floods of tears. The officials stuck with their decision which meant Shin was out of the final and in the bronze medal match. She stayed on the piste until she was escorted off otherwise she would've been blackcarded. She received a standing ovation from the crowd but unfortunately lost the bronze medal match.

It was an absolute farce from the timekeeper and the rest of the officials and you can't help but feel sorry for her.

Everyone looked pissed after the Shotput rounds ended.  :(

Holy crap, the 20 lap race was intense. Was thinking (and hoping) Kenya was gonna win that, but the Ethiopian shot in front.

And just as I predicted, the whities and Asians lost bad to the blacks, who overlapped them twice.

Just got back from watching handball. Wow, it's fast paced. Croatia topped Montenegro 27-26 in the first match with the Montenegrins scuffing a chance in the dying seconds of the game and Russia pulled a 31-27 victory over Brazil, which is a shame because the entire crowd were chanting them on.

Also, the Olympic Stadium at night is beautiful.
